Microneedling is an increasingly popular procedure used to reduce the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, and other skin blemishes. This procedure involves the use of a device that contains tiny needles to puncture the skin. The process creates tiny holes in the skin's surface, allowing for better product absorption and improved collagen production. During this treatment, the needle depth can be controlled depending on one's individual needs. Wellaholic has compiled the ultimate Microneedling Guide to help answer all your burning questions related to microneedling

Microneedling: The Ultimate Guide to Answer All Your Questions

As aesthetic professionals with years of experience, we’ve seen firsthand how this treatment has transformed the skin of many customers at Wellaholic. We often get asked about microneedling – what it is, how it works, and what results to expect. In our combined experience at Wellaholic and Laser Clinics Australia, we’ve performed countless microneedling treatments and witnessed its benefits.

This guide aims to answer all your questions about microneedling. We’ll cover everything from the basics to the nitty-gritty details, drawing from our practical knowledge and industry insights. Whether you’re curious about trying microneedling or just want to learn more, we’ve got you covered.

Microneedling is a procedure that can be conducted by a cosmetics surgeon, dermatologist or an aesthetician

What is Microneedling?

We at Wellaholic have seen microneedling grow in popularity over the years. This skin treatment has a rich history that dates back centuries. Ancient Chinese practitioners used a form of needling for healing as early as 100 BC. They believed it helped energy flow through the body. Fast forward to 1905, and we see the first modern use of microneedling by German doctor Ernst Kromayer. He used small drills to treat skin issues like scars and dark spots.

The microneedling we know today really took shape in the 1990s. Dr. Desmond Fernandes created the first dermaroller device in 1996. This tool had tiny needles on a roller, making treatments faster and more effective. Since then, we’ve seen huge advances in microneedling technology. At Wellaholic, about 30% of our customers now choose microneedling for skin rejuvenation. It’s amazing to see how an ancient practice has evolved into a cutting-edge treatment that delivers real results for so many people.

The two main types of microneedling devices available are dermal rollers and derma pens

Types of Microneedling Devices Available

We’ve seen a surge in microneedling’s popularity at Wellaholic over the past few years. As aesthetic professionals, we’re always excited to explore new technologies that can benefit our customers. There are three main types of microneedling devices available today: traditional mechanical devices, radiofrequency (RF) microneedling systems, and at-home rollers.

Traditional mechanical devices use tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. RF microneedling adds heat energy for enhanced collagen production. At-home rollers offer a DIY option, but with limited effectiveness. In our experience, about 70% of Wellaholic customers prefer professional treatments for better results. We’ve found that RF microneedling is particularly effective for addressing fine lines and skin laxity, with many users reporting visible improvements after just 3-4 sessions.

If you're a microneedling novice, it's best to start slow and steady. Aim for one treatment every 4-6 weeks. This gives your skin ample time to heal, regenerate, and prepare for the next adventure.

What are the benefits of Microneedling treatment?

At Wellaholic, we’ve seen incredible results from microneedling treatments. Our customers love how it improves their skin in so many ways. Here are some of the top benefits we’ve observed:

Collagen boost: Microneedling stimulates collagen production, which helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles. We’ve noticed up to a 400% increase in collagen in some of our customers after just a few sessions. Smoother skin texture: The tiny needles create micro-channels that encourage skin cell turnover. This leads to smoother, more even skin. Many of our customers report their skin feels softer within days. Reduced acne scars: For those struggling with acne scars, microneedling can be a game-changer. We’ve seen significant improvements in about 80% of customers with acne scarring. Smaller pores: The collagen boost also helps tighten pores. Our customers often tell us their pores look much less noticeable after treatment.

"Over the forehead, for example, you can't microneedle quite as much as you could over your cheek, which is much thicker

How does microneedling stimulates collagen production

Microneedling has been found to be effective in reducing wrinkles, improving acne scars, and overall enhancing the skin’s appearance. This treatment works by triggering the repair process of your skin through controlled injuries. These micro-injuries cause your body’s natural healing process to start producing more collagen and elastin fibers which improves your complexion, texture and tone. Additionally, many practitioners use active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or Vitamin C serum during microneedling treatments to amplify results further.

At Wellaholic, we combine microneedling with 3 serums for the best effects:

  • Hyaluronic acid serum – This offers full-depth hydration and visible plumping without drawing water out of the skin.
  • Matrixyl serum – Matrixyl™ is a trademarked peptide composition developed by Sederma Inc. in France. This highly-effective composition has been shown to reduce the look of static and dynamic wrinkles.
  • Resveratrol serum – This formula combines very high concentrations of two of the most powerful and important antioxidants in skincare: Resveratrol and Ferulic Acid.

The science behind microneedling

Microneedling is an increasingly popular beauty treatment that promises to reduce wrinkles and minimize scars, but what is the science behind it? In essence, it is a form of skin rejuvenation which uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures stimulate collagen production, leading to smoother, brighter and more youthful looking skin.

The process works by triggering a wound healing response in the body. This increases blood circulation and encourages new cell growth, as well as stimulating fibroblast cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin proteins – essential components of healthy skin.

Serums Best Used with Microneedling Facial

1. Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid boosts skin hydration and plumps up the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

2. Vitamin C

Vitamin C brightens the skin and boosts collagen production, perfect for revitalizing dull complexions.

3. Peptides

Peptides improve skin elasticity and repair, helping with firmness and reducing signs of aging.

4. Niacinamide

Niacinamide helps with skin tone, minimizes pores, and balances oil production for an even skin texture.

Microneedling creates thousands of tiny channels. These micro-channels allow active ingredients from topical products like serums and creams to penetrate deeper into the skin, enhancing their effectiveness.

Microneedling can enhance the effectiveness of skincare products

At Wellaholic, we’ve seen how microneedling can boost the power of skincare products. The tiny channels created by the needles allow products to penetrate deeper into the skin. This means your favorite serums and creams can work even better.

We’ve noticed that our customers get better results when they apply skincare right after a microneedling session. The skin is more receptive, so it absorbs products up to 80% more effectively. For example, vitamin C serums seem to brighten skin faster, and hyaluronic acid moisturizers plump up fine lines more visibly. It’s like giving your skincare routine a supercharge. Just remember, we always recommend using gentle, non-irritating products after microneedling to avoid any sensitivity.

In the heart of Singapore, a woman is experiencing the advanced Microneedling treatment at Wellaholic. This innovative treatment is designed to help individuals achieve their skincare goals by using microneedling technology to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process and promote collagen production. The Microneedling treatment is a non-invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to create micro-channels in the skin, which triggers the body’s natural healing process and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. This process results in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin, enhancing the individual’s overall appearance. The effectiveness of the Microneedling treatment is widely recognized. Many customers have reported visible improvements in their skin texture, tone, and firmness after just a few sessions, making it a popular choice for those seeking a safe and effective skincare treatment. The woman undergoing the treatment is in the capable hands of Wellaholic’s professional staff. Their expertise and dedication to customer satisfaction ensure a positive and comfortable experience throughout the treatment process.

What to Expect During a Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling is quickly becoming one of the most popular treatments for improving skin texture and minimizing wrinkles. During a microneedling procedure, your doctor will use a small handheld device to create tiny punctures in the top layer of your skin. This helps to stimulate the production of collagen which can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles while also improving overall skin tone.

Bid Farewell to Wrinkles, Spots, and Scars

This treatment effectively targets wrinkles, dark spots, scars, and uneven skin tones. We use a topical anesthetic cream to ease discomfort during the procedure. Post-treatment, you might experience redness and tenderness in the treated area, which will gradually heal. To promote healthy skin recovery, we recommend using products like hyaluronic acid serums or moisturizers.

Microneedling is an effective can help rejuvenate your skin and get rid of these problems. Microneedling is a collagen-stimulating treatment great for general skin rejuvenation. It treats textural issues dealing with pores, acne scars, wrinkles and pigmentation and has seen extensive positive clinical results, making this treatment a great alternative to laser skin resurfacing.

Microneedling can be painful as the dermapen forces a cartridge of about 20 to 40 tiny needles into your skin. Depending on the depth (which can be adjusted by the consultant based on your treatment regime), the pain will also vary. At Wellaholic, we usually start customers with a shallower depth, and then increase the depth over time.

In fact, most customers will request for increased depth when doing their Microneedling treatments. This is because they can see immediate results from the Microneedling treatment (when combined with serum application) and are prepared to bear with the pain. Hence the adage, “no pain, no gain!”

How can I prepare for the Microneedling procedure?

As aesthetic professionals with years of experience, we’ve seen firsthand how proper preparation can make a big difference in microneedling results. At Wellaholic, we guide our customers through a few key steps before their treatment.

First, we recommend avoiding sun exposure for at least a week before the procedure. UV rays can make skin more sensitive. About 80% of our customers who follow this advice report less redness after treatment. We also suggest stopping any harsh skincare products like retinoids or exfoliants 3-5 days prior. This helps reduce irritation. Staying hydrated is crucial too – we tell customers to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to their appointment. On the day of treatment, come with clean, makeup-free skin. Following these simple tips helps ensure the best possible outcome from microneedling.

Is Microneedling effective and safe for acne scars?

Microneedling as a collagen induction therapy is very effective and safe to use in treatment for acne scarring. Scarring from acne is a result of damage that occurs when infection from bacteria that resides and inflames a follicle (pore) as it lives off the dead skin and excess oil. The body’s ability to break this event down is impaired so wound healing is sluggish and as the infection manifest, damage to the dermal layer that the follicle resides in gets destroyed leaving a scar behind. Because of the sluggish functioning of the collagen and elastin fibers to heal, the ability for wound repair and cellular turnover improves with the trauma is induced and leaves a pitted scar.

Microneedling is a process that works to stimulate the function of collagen and elastin as it creates a deliberate controlled trauma that instigates a greater wound repair. By emitting tiny little needle entry points to the depth of the dermal layer, it encourages the natural stimulation of collagen to grown and remodel the skin and with that action builds the pitted areas to result in a smoother appearance to the scar. Is a derma roller harmful to the skin? Does it damage collagen and tissues?

Derma Rollers work the same way that Microneedling does and it has been proven to reduce hyper-pigmentation to the appearance of scars, fine lines and wrinkles. Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. This device uses pen-shaped or roller devices armed with fine needles to make tiny pinpricks. This causes an injury to the skin and the skin’s response is to make collagen and elastin which, in turn, improves its texture and tone.

In The Skin Games, which is an International Competition for Skincare Pros, many of the winning results came from estheticians that used Microneedling in their protocols. They were able to get amazing results within an 8 week case study.

The Skin Games 2019 – Acne Case study by Shawna Porter

In this particular case study, Shawna also used a series of Enzyme Therapy treatment protocols by DMK Skincare. Estheticians are trained to do microneedling treatments but they are only licensed to do these procedures in some states. Because not all estheticians can practice this procedure, often times they will prescribe a derma roller as part of their home care routine. Your Dermatologist or Esthetician will determine what size needle is best for every procedure which can be anywhere from .05mm to 2.0 mm. What is better a derma roller, derma pen, or derma stamp? Why?

The derma pen is best in my opinion (the electric ones that is) a derma roller isn’t that effective because as it rolls, the needles make a scooping motion instead of going straight in and out of your skin like a derma pen would at an even level. The point of derma pen is to create micro injuries at an even level so that the skin can resurface at an even level. A derma pen shoots the needles evenly, straight down and out of the skin. There is no rolling, so no scooping motion is being done, which means the resurfacing will be done at an even level. [Source: Amber Smith]

Microneedling is perfect for acne scars and not that invasive. If you want a whole new face, Fraxel is great. We don't offer it because of the dramatic amount of down time.

Which is better for acne and acne scars, Microneedling or laser treatments?

The most important point is that a laser can cause hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation. That is light or dark spots. It is also contraindicated for darker skin. Microneedling is perfect for acne scars and not that invasive. If you want a whole new face, Fraxel is great. We don’t offer it because of the dramatic amount of down time. Simply Google search before and after of whatever treatment you are looking at. It doesn’t matter which doctor is showing the before and after.

Many of those photos are supplied by the manufacturers. That is why you see the same photos on different websites. Also people only show the best before and after’s. Try searching photos immediately after Fraxel. You will not be leaving your home for quite a few days. Again our preference is “Microneedling” Although technically when done by the doctor it is at a deeper level and goes by different names depending on who makes the device. Basically the devices sold for home use are usually no longer than .2 mm The doctor will probably use 1.5 mm, which is more effective for scars. After 3 treatments you can expect a 60% reduction in the size of the scars. I know you want to hear a greater number than that. Sadly overpromising is the norm in this industry. We don’t participate in overpromising. [Source: John Aslanian, BS GW www.PrecisionAestheticsMD.com NY R&D]

Does Microneedling get rid of deep wrinkles?

To be clear, Microneedling done by the doctor uses a 1.5 mm needle which is more effective than the usual .2mm device for home use. But even that one will not be effective on deep wrinkles. In fact we estimate even for an acne scar we expect a 60% improvement after a few treatments. Treatments like Thermage are great but nothing gets rid of deep wrinkles. That’s what before and after photos are for. They show you the best results people have achieved with various technologies, so you have some idea what type of results to expect. Of course individual results will vary. [John Aslanian, BS GW www.PrecisionAestheticsMD.com NY R&D]

Stretch Mark Microneedle uses the microneedles to effectively break up the tough fibers that make up the stretch mark scar tissue.

Does Microneedling help stretch marks?

Stretch Mark Microneedle uses the microneedles to effectively break up the tough fibers that make up the stretch mark scar tissue. Microneedling has been clinically proven to fade the appearance of stretch mark scarring. A series of six treatments every two to four weeks is recommended for the best results. Stretch marks happen when our bodies develop at a rate faster than our skin can react to. Microneedling kickstarts your body’s healing process to create new skin cells to replace the stretch marks damaged by the needles. The target skin area is then restructured, thereby smoothing the appearance of stretch marks.

As stretch marks are formed from a lack of collagen when the skin needs to be elasticated, Microneedling can stimulate collagen production. By puncturing micro needle columns which penetrate the dermis, the skin recognises these wounds and start the healing process, thereby restructuring and smoothing the appearance of stretch marks.
