In this 2016 comparative study by Wenhai Li, Chengyi Liu, Zhou Chen, Lin Cai, Cheng Zhou, Qianxi, Xu, Houmin Li & Jianzhong Zhang submitted to the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, the team tried to compare the safety as well as efficacy of using a low fluence high repetition 810nm diode laser with a high fluence low repetation rate diode laser for permanent hair removal in Chinese women. 92 women were selected for this study, and it concluded that low fluence, high repetition rate diode laser can efficienly remove unwanted hair but also significantly improve tolerability and reduce adverse effects on the skin. Background of Research

In the realm of permanent hair removal, various methods have been developed and refined over the years. Among these, the use of diode lasers has emerged as a popular and effective solution. However, not all diode lasers are created equal. This study aims to compare two different types of diode lasers used for permanent axillary hair removal in Chinese women, specifically focusing on their safety and efficacy.

The first type of diode laser examined in this study operates at a low fluence but with a high repetition rate. Fluence refers to the energy delivered per unit area, while the repetition rate refers to the frequency at which the laser pulses are delivered. This type of laser, known as an 810-nm diode laser, delivers smaller amounts of energy more frequently. The goal of using a low fluence, high repetition rate laser is to minimize potential damage to the skin while still effectively targeting the hair follicles for removal.

On the other hand, the second type of diode laser operates at a high fluence but with a low repetition rate. This means it delivers larger amounts of energy less frequently. While this approach may potentially offer more immediate results, it also carries a higher risk of side effects due to the higher energy levels used.

The comparison of these two types of lasers is crucial in determining the most effective and safest method for permanent axillary hair removal. By examining the safety and efficacy of both the low fluence, high repetition rate 810-nm diode laser and the high fluence, low repetition rate diode laser, this study aims to provide valuable insights that can guide future treatments and procedures.

High-fluence diode lasers with contact cooling have emerged as the gold standard to remove unwanted hair. Lowering the energy should result in less pain and could theoretically affect the efficacy of the therapy.

Objective of Study

In the pursuit of beauty and personal grooming, permanent hair removal has become a sought-after procedure by many, particularly among women. Among the various methods available, the use of diode lasers has gained significant attention due to its promising results. However, it’s important to note that there are different types of diode lasers, each with its own set of parameters that can greatly affect the outcome of the procedure.

This study aims to delve deeper into this topic by comparing two specific types of diode lasers used for permanent axillary hair removal in Chinese women. The first type operates at a low fluence but with a high repetition rate, specifically an 810-nm diode laser. In layman’s terms, ‘fluence’ refers to the energy delivered per unit area, while ‘repetition rate’ pertains to the frequency at which the laser pulses are delivered. This means that this type of laser delivers smaller amounts of energy but does so more frequently. The goal of using a low fluence, high repetition rate laser is to minimize potential damage to the skin while still effectively targeting the hair follicles for removal.

On the other hand, the second type of diode laser operates at a high fluence but with a low repetition rate. This means it delivers larger amounts of energy but does so less frequently.

Methods

Ninety-two Chinese women received four axillae laser hair removal treatments at 4-week intervals using the low fluence, high repetition rate 810-nm diode laser in super hair removal (SHR) mode on one side and the high fluence, low repetition rate diode laser in hair removal (HR) mode on the other side. Hair counts were done at each follow-up visit and 6-month follow-up after the final laser treatment using a “Hi Quality Hair Analysis Program System”; the immediate pain score after each treatment session was recorded by a visual analog scale.

Results and Conclusion

The study found that the use of an 810-nm diode laser in SHR (Super Hair Removal) mode resulted in a significant reduction in unwanted hair. Specifically, the overall median reduction of hair was 90.2% at the 6-month follow-up. This is a substantial decrease, demonstrating the effectiveness of this particular laser and mode for hair removal.

In comparison, the same 810-nm diode laser used in HR (High Repetition) mode resulted in an overall median reduction of hair of 87% at the 6-month follow-up. While this is slightly lower than the SHR mode, it still represents a significant reduction in unwanted hair, indicating that this mode is also effective for hair removal.

However, the study didn’t just look at the effectiveness of these two modes. It also examined the comfort levels experienced by the patients during the treatments. The median pain scores reported by patients were 2.75 in SHR mode and 6.75 in HR mode. This suggests that patients found the SHR mode to be more comfortable and less painful than the HR mode.

Furthermore, the study found that the low fluence, high repetition rate diode laser not only efficiently removed unwanted hair but also significantly improved tolerability and reduced adverse events during the course of treatment. This is an important finding as it indicates that this type of laser and mode can provide a more comfortable and safer experience for patients undergoing hair removal treatments.

In conclusion, the study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness and safety of different modes of diode lasers for permanent hair removal. It highlights the potential benefits of using a low fluence, high repetition rate 810-nm diode laser in SHR mode, including high efficacy, improved tolerability, and a reduction in adverse events.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is SHR Laser Hair Removal, and how does it differ from traditional methods?

A: SHR (Super Hair Removal) Laser is an advanced technology that uses gentler pulses of energy for hair removal. Unlike traditional methods like IPL or regular lasers, SHR gradually heats the hair follicles, making it a safer and more comfortable option.
