Introduction
Have you ever wondered if fat freezing is right for everyone?
As aesthetic professionals with years of experience, we’ve seen many customers at Wellaholic curious about this popular treatment. But not everyone is a good fit for fat freezing. We’ve noticed some common factors that make certain people unsuitable candidates.
In this article, we’ll share our insights on who should avoid fat freezing and why. Our goal is to help you make an informed decision about your body contouring options.
Fat Freezing Overview
We’ve seen a lot of interest in fat freezing at Wellaholic lately. This treatment uses cold to target and remove stubborn fat. It’s a non-surgical way to shape your body without downtime.
Here’s how it works: We use a device that cools fat cells to a low temperature. This makes the fat cells break down over time. Your body then removes these damaged cells naturally. The best part? The treatment doesn’t harm your skin or other tissues. Many of our customers love it because they can get back to their day right after a session. It’s great for those spots that don’t respond well to diet and exercise alone.
Criteria for Suitable Candidates for Fat Freezing
As co-founders of Wellaholic, we’ve seen many customers achieve great results with fat freezing. But it’s not for everyone. Here’s who we think makes a good candidate for this treatment:
Healthy Weight Range: Fat freezing works best for those close to their ideal weight. We often see customers at Wellaholic who are within 10-15 pounds of their goal. They have stubborn fat pockets that won’t budge with diet and exercise alone.
Specific Problem Areas: This treatment targets localized fat. Our customers often want to address areas like love handles, belly pouches, or back rolls. It’s not meant for overall weight loss.
Realistic Expectations: Good candidates understand fat freezing isn’t a quick fix. We explain to our customers that results take time and may require multiple sessions. Those who are patient and committed to a healthy lifestyle tend to be the happiest with their outcomes.
Consultation and Evaluation Before Fat Freezing
We at Wellaholic believe in giving our customers the best experience possible. That’s why we always start with a thorough consultation before any fat freezing treatment. During this chat, we’ll ask about your goals and concerns. We want to know what areas you’re looking to target and what results you’re hoping for.
Next, we’ll do a physical assessment. This involves a gentle pinching of the skin in the areas you want treated. We’re checking to see if there’s enough fat for the treatment to be effective. We’ll also take some “before” photos. These help us track your progress and show you the amazing results later on. Remember, we’re here to answer any questions you have. Our goal is to make sure you feel comfortable and confident about your decision to try fat freezing at Wellaholic.
Who is Not Suitable for Fat Freezing?
As an Aesthetic Director, I often get asked who is suitable for fat freezing treatments. While fat freezing is generally safe and effective, there are certain groups of people who should avoid it. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not undergo fat freezing, as the effects on the baby are unknown. Those with certain medical conditions like cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria are also unsuitable candidates.
It’s important to have realistic expectations when considering fat freezing. The treatment is designed to target stubborn pockets of fat, not achieve drastic weight loss. If you’re expecting significant weight reduction from fat freezing alone, you may be disappointed with the results. Fat freezing is also not a treatment for obesity. Additionally, those with excessive loose skin may not see optimal results, as the treatment does not address skin laxity. Lastly, if you have an extreme sensitivity to cold, it’s best to avoid fat freezing treatments altogether.
Wellaholic’s Professional Observations (with our Customers)
Based on my experience treating customers at Wellaholic, here are a few interesting observations about who may not be suitable for fat freezing treatments:
- Patients with unrealistic expectations. Some customers come in expecting fat freezing to be a magic solution for significant weight loss. However, the procedure is best for reducing stubborn pockets of fat, not overall body weight. I always make sure to have an honest discussion about what results can realistically be achieved.
- Those with certain medical conditions. While fat freezing is very safe for most people, there are a few rare conditions that can make someone unsuitable, such as cryoglobulinemia or cold agglutinin disease. I always do a thorough medical history review during the consultation to identify any potential contraindications.
- Patients with a lot of loose skin. Fat freezing is great at reducing fat deposits, but it won’t tighten loose, saggy skin. For some patients with poor skin elasticity, the skin may look even looser after the fat is reduced. In these cases, I may recommend radiofrequency skin tightening in combination with or instead of fat freezing.
- Those who are very sensitive to cold. While most people tolerate the cold sensation of fat freezing quite well, a small percentage find it too uncomfortable, especially during the beginning of the treatment. Patients with conditions like Raynaud’s syndrome or cold urticaria are generally not good candidates.
- Patients who are very overweight or obese. Fat freezing works best on localized fat bulges in patients who are at or close to their ideal body weight. It’s not a treatment for generalized obesity. I counsel patients who have a lot of excess weight to lose to focus on diet and exercise first before considering fat freezing for stubborn areas.
The key is always to have an in-depth consultation to review the patient’s goals, medical history, and treatment areas to determine if they are likely to be satisfied with the results of fat freezing. Setting appropriate expectations is crucial for a positive treatment experience.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Who is Generally Considered Unsuitable for Fat Freezing?
Individuals with medical conditions that make them sensitive to cold temperatures, such as cryoglobulinemia, cold urticaria, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, are generally considered unsuitable for fat freezing. This non-invasive fat reduction treatment, also known as cryolipolysis or CoolSculpting, can exacerbate these conditions, posing a significant health risk. Moreover, those with severe skin conditions or open wounds in the treated area are advised to avoid this procedure to prevent complications.
Is Fat Freezing Suitable for People Looking to Lose a Lot of Weight?
No, fat freezing is not advisable for those seeking significant weight loss. It’s designed for reducing fat in specific areas of the body with stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. It’s not a weight-loss solution but rather a fat reduction procedure aimed at contouring and sculpting the body by eliminating unwanted fat cells. Individuals with obesity or those seeking to lose extensive weight are suggested to consider alternative weight management and fat reduction treatments.
Can Fat Freezing Be Performed on All Areas of the Body?
While fat freezing can be impressively versatile, it’s not universally applicable to all areas of the body. The procedure is most effective on areas where subcutaneous fat can be easily targeted by the applicator, such as the abdomen, thighs, bra fat, back, and under the chin. Fat bulges in these areas can typically be reduced effectively with cryolipolysis. However, fat freezing might not be suitable for treating areas with thinner layers of fat.
Who should avoid CoolSculpting?
People who should avoid CoolSculpting include those with known sensitivity to cold such as cold urticaria, Raynaud’s disease, pernio, or chilblains, cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. CoolSculpting is also not recommended for people who are severely overweight or obese, pregnant or breastfeeding, have poor circulation in the treatment area, or have an active implanted device like a pacemaker. Additionally, the treatment should be avoided if you have a hernia, eczema, inflammation, or recent surgery on or near the treatment area.
What disqualifies you from CoolSculpting?
At Wellaholic, we prioritize your safety above all else when it comes to CoolSculpting treatments. You may not be a suitable candidate if you have conditions like cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria that make you hypersensitive to cold temperatures. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and trying to conceive are also contraindications. We don’t recommend CoolSculpting if you have poor skin elasticity, chronic pain, severe anxiety disorders, or bleeding conditions. Certain skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, as well as recent surgery or injury in the treatment area may also disqualify you. The best way to determine if CoolSculpting is right for you is to come in for a consultation so we can review your medical history and aesthetic goals together.
