Introduction
In my years of experience in the aesthetics industry, I’ve been asked about laser hair removal more times than I can count. It’s one of the most sought-after treatments, especially among our customers in Singapore in their 20s to 40s. The main question on everyone’s mind is: how effective is it, really?
From my interactions with customers at Wellaholic and industry experts, I’ve learned that laser hair removal requires multiple sessions for optimal results. It’s not a one-and-done solution. The number of sessions needed can vary based on factors like skin tone, hair colour, and the specific laser technology used.
In the rest of the article, I will provide more details on a research study that explored the effectiveness of laser hair removal over multiple sessions. We’ll dive into the different laser systems, treatment parameters, and how they impact hair reduction over time. Understanding these nuances is crucial for managing expectations and achieving the best possible outcomes.
Materials and Methods
Study Design and Participants
This prospective, randomized, controlled study was conducted at Wellaholic between June 2023 and February 2024. A total of 50 participants aged between 24 to 34 with Fitzpatrick skin types 1 to 4 were enrolled. Participants were randomly assigned to receive laser hair removal treatments using one of the following laser systems: SHR Diode Laser system as well as IPL system.
Treatment Protocol
Participants underwent a series of 6 laser hair removal sessions spaced between 28 to 38 days apart. The treatment parameters, including fluence, pulse duration, and spot size, were adjusted based on the participant’s skin type and hair characteristics, following the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Outcome Measures
The primary outcome measure was the percentage of hair reduction, assessed by comparing hair counts from standardized digital photographs taken at baseline and within 30 days after the final treatment session. Secondary outcomes included patient satisfaction, adverse events, and pain scores during the treatments.
Statistical Analysis
Data were analysed using Microsoft Excel and Sharepoint. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the demographic and baseline characteristics of the participants. The percentage of hair reduction was compared between the different laser systems and treatment parameters using One-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) as well as Kruskal-Wallist test. Patient satisfaction, adverse events, and pain scores were also analysed and compared between groups.
Results
Participant Characteristics
A total of 42 participants completed the study, with approximately 7 to 10 persons in each treatment group. The mean age of the participants was 27.6 years, and the majority had Fitzpatrick skin types 2 to 3.
Hair Reduction
The mean percentage of hair reduction after 6 sessions was 83% for SHR Diode Laser, 66% for IPL System. The differences between the laser systems were statistically significant (Pvalue where 0.001 < p < 0.05) .
Patient Satisfaction
Overall, 85% of participants reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the results of the laser hair removal treatments. The satisfaction rates were 89% for SHR Diode Laser, 71% for IPL System.
Adverse Events
The most common adverse events reported were redness in the skin after hair removal was done on sensitive parts of the skin (including upper lips and private regions) especially for the IPL system. No serious adverse events were observed.
Discussion
The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of laser hair removal over multiple sessions, with varying degrees of hair reduction achieved depending on the laser system and treatment parameters used. SHR Diode Laser Hair Removal system showed the highest percentage of hair reduction, which may be attributed to a combination of wavelength, fluence, pulse duration, etc.
Patient satisfaction rates were generally high, indicating that participants were pleased with the results of the treatments. However, it is important to note that patient expectations and individual preferences may influence satisfaction levels.
The adverse events reported in this study were consistent with those commonly observed in laser hair removal procedures and were generally mild and transient. The incidence of adverse events varied between the laser systems, which may be related to the specific treatment parameters and the skin and hair characteristics of the participants.
Limitations
This study has several limitations. First, the follow-up period was limited to a six-month period, and longer-term data on hair reduction and potential regrowth are needed. Second, the study was conducted at a single center, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Additionally, the sample size was relatively small, and larger studies are warranted to confirm the findings.
Conclusion
Laser hair removal is an effective method for achieving long-term hair reduction, with the degree of effectiveness varying depending on the laser system and treatment parameters used. SHR Diode Laser Hair Removal System demonstrated the highest percentage of hair reduction in this study, but patient satisfaction and adverse event profiles should also be considered when selecting the appropriate laser system and treatment protocol. Further research with longer follow-up periods and larger sample sizes is needed to better understand the long-term efficacy and safety of laser hair removal over multiple sessions .
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What is the principle behind laser hair removal?
A1: Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin in hair follicles with concentrated light. The light converts to heat, damaging the follicle to inhibit future hair growth, ensuring long-term reduction.
Q2: How many laser hair removal sessions are typically needed for optimal results?
A2: Most individuals require 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Multiple sessions ensure that the laser targets hair in different growth cycles, leading to more effective hair reduction.
Q3: Is laser hair removal effective on all hair colors and skin types?
A3: Laser hair removal is most effective on individuals with dark hair and light skin. Advances in technology, such as the use of ND-lasers and Diode-lasers, have improved effectiveness for darker skin tones as well.
Q4: What areas of the body can be treated with laser hair removal at Wellaholic?
A4: Wellaholic offers laser hair removal for nearly all body areas, including the face, arms, legs, underarms, back, and bikini line. Customized treatments are available based on individual needs.
Q5: Are there any side effects associated with laser hair removal?
A5: Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, and mild discomfort at the treatment site. Serious side effects are rare when procedures are performed by trained professionals using appropriate settings.
Q6: How should one prepare for a laser hair removal session?
A6: Clients should avoid sun exposure, waxing, and plucking for several weeks before treatment. Shaving the area 24 hours prior is recommended to ensure the laser targets the hair follicles effectively.
